Hundreds of obituaries were published Saturday in daily newspapers for Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Phil Everly, who died Friday in Los Angeles at the age of 74. As half of the pioneering harmony vocal duo the Everly Brothers, he created an enduring musical legacy that profoundly inspired everyone from The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel to Norah Jones and Green Day leader Billy Joe Armstrong, who in November released the duo project "Foreverly," a heartfelt, song-for-song remake of the Everlys’ second album, 1958's "Songs Our Father Taught Us."

But few of the obituaries mentioned that Phil and Don Everly spent six months in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in 1961 and 1962, or that the brothers did their basic training in San Diego and were then stationed at Camp Pendleton.
