Florida reporter gets top honor for veterans charity investigation

The Florida Society of News Editors on Friday awarded FLORIDA TODAY top honors for investigative reporting and public service for the newspaper’s investigation into the questionable practices of charities soliciting cash in the name of needy veterans.

In the special report, reporter R. Norman Moody revealed that some of the people collecting buckets of cash were actually paid employees of out-of-town operations that tax returns and other public records showed had given very little of the money to the veterans they said they were helping. The result: local stores and others banned the questionable charity groups from soliciting in Brevard County.
